This route link Dronfield Parish Church with Chesterfield’s famous ‘Crooked Spire’ Church and can be walked in either direction. There are good bus links between Chesterfield and Dronfield so you can return to your starting point.
We’re setting off from the bus stop in Dronfield Civic Centre, following the River Drone valley before climbing over the hills to join the Chesterfeld Canal. We then follow the Cuckoo Way, the Canal towpath.
The high point of the walk is above Old Whittington with views of the ‘Crooked Spire’ and Bolsover Castle on a clear day. The route also passes Revolution House and Tapton Lock Visitor Centre before finishing in Chesterfield.

Road Directions
From North/South Leave M1 motorway at junction 29 and take A617 to Chesterfield (approx 4 miles). At roundabout select right lane and take 4th exit (A61). At next roundabout (Tesco) take 2nd exit (A61). At next roundabout select middle lane and take 3rd exit (A61). Leave A61 by 1st exit and at end of slip road turn right (B6057). Follow road into Dronfield (approx 3 miles). Take 1st left after railway station (Lea Road) and turn right after The Forge shopping centre (Church Street). Follow road past Manor House Hotel to Peel Monument and turn left into Civic Centre car park,
From East Follow A617 to junction with M1 motorway and take 3rd exit (A617), then follow route from North/South.
From West Follow A619 into Chesterfield. At traffic light controlled roundabout (Matalan) select middle lane and take 3rd exit. Keep in left lane and, at traffic lights go straight on. At roundabout select middle lane and take 2nd exit (A632). Turn immediately left into slip road to A61. At next roundabout (Tesco) take 2nd exit (A61), then follow route from North/South.
