Stunning Countryside
There’s so much beautiful scenery in Chesterfield Area that you’ll have trouble deciding what you can’t miss. Here are just a few of the ‘must see’ highlights.
Let’s start with Linacre and a saunter around the reservoirs through woodlands carpeted with bluebells. Take a hike up the Cordwell Valley, colourful with rhododendrons, or climb the Fabrick at Ashover to stand nearly 1,000 feet above sea level and look out over 6 counties.
Everyone can explore the ‘Access for All’ Bluebank Loop and discover grasslands rich with wildflowers and clouds of butterflies, oxbow lakes home to amphibians and water birds, and the Cuckoo Way alongside Chesterfield Canal, a haven for wildlife and a stronghold for the endangered water vole
Everywhere you wander, you’ll find sleepy villages like Old Brampton where time really does pass slowly as the church clock counts 63 minutes to the hour. Visit Ault Hucknall with its Saxon church, the final resting place of the philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Search out Steetley Chapel near Whitwell, Europe’s finest example of Norman architecture.
Explore the past on the Creswell Archaeological Way or around the stone circles on Ramsley Moor. Venture onto Big Moor which is true to its name, or Gibbet Moor which isn’t nearly as scary as it sounds. Follow the South Chesterfield Way to find out more about George Stephenson’s connection with the area, or head in the other direction on the North Chesterfield Way which links the ‘Crooked Spire’ with Dronfield town.
Our countryside has something for everyone. Everyone who visits finds their own perfect view, their own favourite village, their own peaceful picnic place. There’s something here for you as well, you just have to give yourself time to find it.
