About
Take a guided tour on the meaning of some of the symbols used in headstone carvings and background information on 5 cemetery masons buried in Spital Cemetery.
This is a Victorian Cemetery, and the Victorians were keen on their symbolism. Cemetery symbolism became a language of its own, particularly floral symbolism.
The tour will take in various carvings on some of the headstones and introduce you to five stonemasons buried in the cemetery, three from one family and one of these a woman.
You will be provided with a glossary of symbols to help identify the meanings that were being conveyed and we will see if we can recognise styles and preferences of each of the featured stonemasons.
