Stonemasons and Cemetery Symbolism
Information Boards
Spital Cemetery is always open to the public for leisure and quiet contemplation. During the period of Heritage Open Days, our new information boards will be on display containing background information about the opening of the Cemetery and some of the interesting stories of people buried there.
Stonemasons
Visitors can explore at any time with a downloadable map and glossary. We have selected 5 stonemasons who are buried in the cemetery for you to contrast and compare their skill, 3 from the same family and one a woman. Admire our well dressing based on an unusual monument symbol.
Tour of Cemetery Symbolism on Sunday 17 September 2023 at 2pm.
Victorians favoured symbolism of many sorts, particularly floral symbolism. Floral symbolism in cemeteries became a special language of its own.
Only 12 people per tour. Tour takes about one hour. Spital Cemetery is on a sloping site. Some of the tour may take you off the main paths where the ground is uneven. Please make sure you have appropriate footwear.

Road Directions
Parking is available along the drive after entering via the second gate, on right just before Cemetery Road. Meet near Community Hub, entering via top gate.
From North/South Leave M1 at junction 29 and follow A617 to Chesterfield (approx 4 miles). At traffic light controlled roundabout select middle lane and take 3rd exit. At next roundabout select right lane and take 3rd exit (A632, signposted Bolsover). At traffic lights (Bridge Inn) go straight on and, at next traffic lights go straight on again. Pass first gate on right and follow road to enter by second gate on right.
From East Follow A617 to junction with M1 motorway, then follow route from North/South.
From West Follow A619 to Chesterfield. At traffic light controlled roundabout (Matalan) select middle lane and take 3rd exit. Keep in left lane and, at traffic lights go straight on. Keep in left lane and, at roundabout, select middle lane and take 2nd exit. ). At traffic lights (Bridge Inn) go straight on and, at next traffic lights go straight on again. Pass first gate on right and follow road to enter by second gate on right.
